Overview
This article lists the validation warnings we have set up that you may see once you have created a pay and/or update event. We have broken these warnings down by Employee and Business Warnings, respectively, and have created these warnings to reduce the possibility of a failed or partially successful lodgement. However, please note, we can only identify some errors after you have lodged the event with the ATO.

- You have not set up the I Will be Lodging Reports to the ATO field correctly to support multiple employing entities.
- You have selected the option to lodge As an Intermediary for Multiple Employing Entities; however; there are not multiple employing entities set up in this business.
- The ABN entered for the {organisation name} under ATO Settings is invalid.
- {Organisation Name} must have a phone number.
- {Organisation Name} has invalid characters in the phone number.
- {Organisation Name} contains invalid characters.
- {Organisation Name} contact name contains invalid characters.
- Employing entity {Name} is not enabled for lodgement.
- This event cannot be the first lodgement for the financial year.
- The pay category name or allowance description isn't a recognised JobKeeper identifier.
- The pay category name/allowance description isn't a recognised JobMaker identifier.
Employee Warnings
A valid postcode is required
You must enter on the employees' record a valid postcode, and it must be four digits long. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Tax File Number is invalid
You must enter on the employees record a valid tax file number and it must be 8 or 9 digits long. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Address is too long
You must enter on the employee record a valid address, and it must be less than 39 characters. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
A valid address is required
You must enter on the employee record a valid address; i.e. you must complete both the address and suburb fields. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Invalid date of birth
You must enter on the employee record a valid date of birth and it must be less than 110 years. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Invalid email address
You must enter in the employees record a valid email address, and each address goes through a standard validation process. If this message appears, the email address may contain an invalid character, or the '@' symbol is missing. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Year to date allowances must not be negative
The ATO will not accept Year to Date (YTD) allowance amounts that are negative, i.e., less than $0. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Year to date super must not be negative
The ATO will not accept Year to Date (YTD) super amounts that are negative, i.e. less than $0. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Year to date super deductions must not be negative
The ATO will not accept Year to Date (YTD) super deductions that are negative, i.e., less than $0. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Year to date union fee deductions must not be negative
The ATO will not accept Year to Date (YTD) union fee deductions that are negative, i.e., less than $0. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Foreign tax paid amount must be greater than zero when final event indicator is true
When you classify an employee with a Foreign Employment (FEI) income type, you must pay or be liable to pay, the foreign government; i.e., you must pay the employee's foreign country of employment the required tax to qualify the employee's earnings as foreign employment income. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Lump Sum Financial Year must be provided. When the Lump Sum Type Code is E, Lump Sum Financial Year must be provided.
There is no requirement to record the financial year a Lump Sum E payment relates to during STP Phase 1. However, once your business transitions to STP Phase 2, it will become mandatory to record the financial year in the pay run. The reason for this is that they relate to back payments that could have been over 12 months ago but which you only paid for in the current financial year.
So you will see this warning when you paid an employee against a pay category with the payment classification of Lump Sum E and where you have not recorded a financial year for this payment in the pay run. You will need to resolve this error before you can submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
Duplicate Income Stream Type. Only one of each of the following Income Stream Type Code can be provided: SAW, CHP, WHM, SWP, JPD, VOL, LAB, or OSP
There are conflicting income stream types selected for this employee's record that need correcting. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Country Code must be provided. When the Pay/Update Date is after 30/6/2020, Country Code must be provided when the Income Stream Type Code is one of the following: FEI, WHM, or IAA
You need to enter the employee's home country, as per their visa correctly, from the applicable start date. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Payee Cessation Date must be provided
This warning shows when one of your terminated employees does not have a cessation date. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Cessation Reason Code must be provided
This warning shows when one of your terminated employees does not have a cessation code. If you have not entered this data correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Business Warnings
Business is not enabled for lodgement
This warning shows when your business does not have the STP Lodgements feature enabled. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Tax agent declaration signatory contains invalid characters
This warning shows when the user lodging the event has an invalid email address on the ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Employer declaration signatory contains invalid characters
This warning shows when the user lodging the event has an invalid email address on the ATO Settings page or an STP Pay Event Approver used an invalid email to approve a pay event lodgement. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. ATO Supplier details must be completed
This warning shows when your business has not correctly completed your organisation's ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. The ABN entered for the Intermediary under ATO Settings is invalid
This warning shows when your business has not correctly completed your organisation's ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
The ABN entered for the Tax/BAS Agent under ATO Settings is invalid
This warning shows when your business has not correctly completed your organisation's ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
Phone number cannot be over 16 characters
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your phone number on your organisation's ATO Settings page; i.e. the field contains a phone number with over 16 characters. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Intermediary {Business Name} must have a contact phone number
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your intermediaries' phone number on your organisation's ATO Settings page; i.e. the field contains no information. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Intermediary {Business Name} has invalid characters in the contact phone number
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your intermediaries' phone number on your organisation's ATO Settings page; i.e., the field contains a phone number with over 16 characters. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. When lodging for multiple employing entities, the value of I will be Lodging Reports to the ATO must be set to either As a Registered Tax/BAS Agent or As an Intermediary for Multiple Employing Entities.
This warning shows when your business has multiple employing entities set up in your business and in this case, you can not select on the ATO Supplier Settings page the As the Employer ATO lodgement option. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. You have selected the option to lodge As an Intermediary for Multiple Employing Entities; however; there are not multiple employing entities set up in this business. You will need to change this to either As the Employer or As a Registered Tax/BAS Agent.
This warning shows when your business does not have multiple employing entities set up in your business, however, you have selected on the ATO Supplier Settings page the Multiple Employing Entities lodgement option. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. The ABN entered for the {organisation name} under ATO Settings is invalid
This warning shows when your business has not correctly completed your organisation's ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. {Organisation Name} must have a phone number
This warning shows when your business has not correctly completed your organisation's ATO Settings page. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
{Organisation Name} has invalid characters in the phone number
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your organisation's phone number on your ATO Settings page, i.e. it must be between 2 and 16 numeric characters. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. {Organisation Name} contains invalid characters
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your Legal Name or Employing Entity name on your ATO Settings page; i.e., they contain invalid or special characters not allowed by the ATO. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. This means the phone number entered is invalid. {Organisation Name} contact name contains invalid characters
This warning shows when your business has not correctly entered your contact name on your ATO Settings page; i.e., they contain invalid or special characters not allowed by the ATO. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. Meaning the phone number entered is invalid. Employing entity {Name} is not enabled for lodgement
This warning shows when your business does not have the STP Lodgements feature enabled on one of your entities. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. To read further information on how to resolve this error, refer to the following article.
This event cannot be the first lodgement for the financial year. Any event that does not include all employees marked as 'is final' must be successfully lodged before this event can be lodged
This warning shows because you are attempting to lodge a finalisation event or update event where you marked all employees As Final in your first STP lodgement for the financial year. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. The pay category name/allowance description is not a recognised JobKeeper identifier
This warning means you are trying to process a JobKeeper payment (either a top-up payment or START/FINISH notification) for an employee using a pay category or allowance description that is not in the ATO's prescribed format. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement. The pay category name/allowance description is not a recognised JobMaker identifier
This warning means you are trying to process a JobMaker payment (either a top-up payment or START/FINISH notification) for an employee using a pay category or allowance description that is not in the ATO's prescribed format. If you have not set up this information correctly, the platform will display the above warning when you go to submit an STP lodgement.
